drawbacks of bleaching. "With bleaching, there isn't a lot of control," says Lituchy. "When dentists bleach teeth, they aren't sure what color your teeth will end up, and they don't always tell you there's upkeep. Otherwise, you regress. With porcelain veneers, we pick out the color and that's the color your teeth stay. And veneers unlike bleached teeth or caps, are translucent, which is why they reflect light the way they do. They allow the natural tooth to show through with luster."

And for those unwilling to part with the three Cs: cappuccino, Diet Coke and cabernet, it may be a relief to learn that porcelain does not stain. "However," Lituchy reminds me, "over a 15-year period of drinking those liquids, your natural tooth underneath might darken, and that darkness can reflect under the veneers."

What's the best way to tell if someone's had veneers? She's smiling. A lot more. And bigger. Lituchy notes that I tend not to open my mouth. "You could come off like a snob," he says. "People talking to you don't realize that you have a habit of hiding your teeth. They could read you as cold, unfriendly. It affects the way they react to you. When people do smile often, chances are that you automatically think they're nice. And it could just be their teeth you're responding to."

Could changing my teeth change my life? I prepare to find out:
