Jodie and I arrive at the self-styled 'Dolce & Gabbana of dentists' while New York Fashion Week is in full flow, only to have narrowly missed Naomi Campbell in the waiting room. The paparazzi are outside and have been trying to catch a window shot of her spitting in the basin.

Lowenberg's first client was, believe it or not, Keith Richards, in the 1970s. Other celebrity clients include Cindy Crawford, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Courtney Cox Arquette, Claudia Schiffer, Kevin Spacey, Christy Turlington, Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow. From the signed magazine covers on the wall of the dentists' surgery, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd walked straight into the US Vogue instead.

To my untrained British eye, Jodie's teeth look fine but, when Dr. Lowenberg points out the faults he would like to correct on the likes of Cynthia Nixon, Calista Flockhart and even the seemingly perfect Kate Moss, I realize the impossibly high standards by which he judges others.

Apparently Jodie's teeth are 'canted' - your see more gum on one side of her mouth than the other. She needs surgery to raise the gum line and make it parallel to her eyes. And the colour of her teeth needs 'chippering up' to a standard that's high enough for work on US primetime TV.
