Across the
Atlantic, cosmetic dentistry is the new feng shui, with dentists' offices
looking more like a day spa than sterile place of pain. At Dr. Marc Lowenberg's
Manhattan surgery, clients can have reflexology treatments while they
wait or watch feature films during long dental procedures. Lowenberg,
who regularly bleaches Courtney Cox Arquette's teeth and has applied a
full set of porcelain veneers to American comic Chris Rock, has a client
list that includes Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Amber Valetta,
Jason Patric, Ellen Barkin, Sophie Dahl, Kevyn Aucoin and Kate Moss.
Cheeky comedian Ed Byrne recently commented that, if there were to be
a fire at the Academy Awards ceremony and all the Hollywood stars burned
to within an inch of their Manolos, you'd never identify anyone from their
teeth because they are all the same. Though he was kidding, he was right.
. "There is indeed a standard Hollywood Smile," explains Jacinta
Yeo, "a large smile where you see lots of teeth. From the middle
back you don't just see three teeth, you can see up to seven." See
Julia Roberts or Sophia Loren. "The trick then is with, say, porcelain
veneers, to have more than just the six front teeth done, otherwise it
looks like you've only six front teeth - some dentists will make the veneers
a little thicker towards the back which widens the arch, resulting in
a wider smile. George Hamilton, whose teeth have all been crowned, has
a big white smile because the back teeth pee out from behind the shadow
of the cheek."
